The Big Woods... The Loggers 1900s

At the turn of the century, people explored the forest extensively, often without considering future needs. Early timber harvesting relied on oxen, mules, and horses to gather logs and transport them to mills. Later, steam power facilitated the process by enabling the construction of railroad spurs to move logs more efficiently.

As awareness of the need for conservation, wildfire control, and proper forest management grew, the Society of American Foresters was formed in 1900, and the US Forest Service was established by Congress in 1905.
